Descrizione dell' evento

Every year since 2000 on 17 October, celebrations for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty have been taking place in Dublin.

This year, come and join us on Custom House Quay around the Human Rights and Poverty Stone (close the the Famine Statues) from 10.45 (Commemoration will start sharp at 11am) to mark this day together and to listen to testimonies from people struggling against poverty.

« Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty » This is the call from the first gathering on 17 October 1987, carved on the human rights and poverty stones in Paris and Dublin.

This 1987 call, carved on 50 Human Rights and Poverty Stones around the world, stresses the importance of taking action for everybody's access to human rights. It has had numerous impacts throughout the world, in particular in 2012 with the adoption by the UN of the Guiding Principles on extreme poverty and human rights.

New York - Lunedì 17 Ottobre 2016 - New York - Commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty at the U.N. Headquarters

Resoconto dell' evento.

We had a truly inspiring, beautiful commemoration at the United Nations. You can watch the entire celebration by the video below. We were grateful to have received these words from Jan Eliasson, the Deputy Secretary-General, at the end of the commemoration:

"I want to say that during my many years at the UN, this is one of the most unusual, one of the most inspiring meetings I’ve attended...I think you reminded us of that very important process of bringing together those who are privileged, those who have reached the position of influence, and those who are affected, those who really need to be brought in and actually take part, in the processes that can change the world. Thanks all of you for bringing life in this room."

Overcoming the injustices of persistent poverty and social exclusion is only possible with your participation. We thank you for being a part of this Movement.
